Official 7th CPC DA Formula

Dearness Allowance is linked to the All India Consumer Price Index for Industrial Workers (AICPI-IW), published monthly by the Labour Bureau. For the 7th Pay Commission, the DA percentage is worked out with this formula:

DA % = [ ( Avg AICPI-IW × 2.88 − 261.42 ) ÷ 261.42 ] × 100

Here, Avg AICPI-IW is the average of the last 12 months of the index (base 2016=100), and 2.88 is the linking factor that converts it to the older 2001 base. For illustration, if the 12-month average is 143.5, then 143.5 × 2.88 = 413.28; subtracting 261.42 leaves 151.86; dividing by 261.42 and multiplying by 100 gives about 58.09%, which rounds to 58% DA. The figure is announced for 1 January and 1 July each year.

How to Use This Online DA Calculator

Enter your basic pay or tap a pay matrix level. Choose the current DA rate and the upcoming rate. The tool shows your present DA, the revised DA and the monthly increase. Tick HRA to see your house rent allowance and NPS to see the 10% employee contribution on Basic Pay plus DA, which reduces the net gain from a hike. Pensioners can switch the role to see Dearness Relief on basic pension.

For back pay after a hike, use the DA arrear calculator. For state employees, see the state government DA calculator or the West Bengal DA calculator. The home page has the full salary breakup with TA.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

How do AICPI-IW numbers decide the DA hike?

The Labour Bureau publishes AICPI-IW every month. The 12-month average is put in the 7th CPC formula, which gives the DA percentage. The Centre then announces it for 1 January or 1 July. A higher average index means a bigger DA rise. See the DA arrear calculator to work out back pay.

How does Dearness Relief (DR) apply to pensioners?

Pensioners and family pensioners receive Dearness Relief (DR) at the same percentage as DA for serving employees. DR = Basic Pension × DR% ÷ 100. Choose "Pensioner" in the calculator to switch the labels and hide HRA and NPS.

How does DA affect HRA slabs?

HRA is a percentage of basic pay, and the slab depends on DA. It rose to 27%, 18% and 9% when DA crossed 25%, and to 30%, 20% and 10% for X, Y and Z cities when DA crossed 50%. Further DA hikes do not change the percentages. See the state government DA calculator for state rules.
